Much Wenlock Priory - 21 September 2014

The Shropshire town of Much Wenlock is a quintessentially English town, off the beaten track, but well worth the visit.
Nestling between the River Severn Nr Ironbridge and the Welsh Marches. It claim to be the Birthplace of the Modern Olympiad.
To find the Priory take the A458 Out of Shrewsbury or A4169 Out of Telford. Both Roads meet on the edge of the town. Take the High Street down to Market Squire and turn left on Wilmore Street and then Right on "Bull Ring" and two of three hundred yards down this road is a car park on the left for the Priory.
Pay and display £1.00 all day (as at April 2013)
Much Wenlock is a pretty little town but has very limited parking and I suspect that at some times of the year is very busy and parking at a premium.
There are facilities at the Priory ant the staff very helpful.

The Priory is an English Heritage property.

When we went it was a glorious warm September morning and we spent a about 2 hours wondering round. We did use the audio tours provided by English Heritage.
As you come out of the shop you are screened from the Priory by Trees and this is the first view you get of the Priory.
Abbey in the Morning

Looking from The West door through the Abbey Church to the East End.

To the South of the Abbey was the living quarters the Cloisters.

Some parts are in still standing giving some Idea of what the Priory would have been like.

The Priory is also noted for its Topiary. Though at this end of the Summer it is starting to look a little tired.

There remains some good examples of Decorative Carving throughout the Priory.

This the end wall of the showing the Dormitory above and the Refectory below.

The Priors House on the south east side of the site is still a private house.

The South Isle end wall still remains to almost its full height.
